ISO 56001 for CTOs: piloting innovation projects and the ESG extra point

Updated 2026-11-03

Short answer

ISO 56001:2024 was published on 9 September 2024 and is the first requirements standard in the ISO 56000 series that can be certified by a third party; ISO 56002 before it is only guidance. The key for a CTO is to run 2–3 live innovation projects through the full process, a step that cannot be compressed; the service page lists a typical 6–9 months, or about 5–7 months for organisations that already hold ISO 9001 or 27001. Listed companies earn one extra point overall under indicator S-10 of the TWSE ESG evaluation for ISO 56001 with third-party certification.

How do ISO 56001, ISO 56002 and TIPS differ, and which should a CTO choose?

Which projects should a CTO pilot, and why can this step not be compressed?

Stage 3 on the service page, pilot and rollout, takes about 8–12 weeks and runs 2–3 live innovation projects through the full process; the system is always run once on real projects, not just written down.

The aim is to standardise the process and decision records from idea intake through screening, validation and commercialisation, and to reduce reliance on individuals. When R&D depends on individual experience, know-how leaves with key engineers, knowledge transfer breaks and results are hard to repeat. A CTO should first decide which projects join the pilot and who records the decisions.

Our R&D unit already has ISO 9001 or 27001. Can we share them, and how long does it take?

Yes. The system is built on the ISO 56001 high-level structure and shares its skeleton with 9001 and 27001. The four stages on the service page:

StageWeeks
Diagnosis and strategy3–5 weeks
System design6–8 weeks
Pilot and rollout8–12 weeks
Audit and certification4–8 weeks

In total typically 6–9 months; about 5–7 months for organisations with ISO 9001 or 27001.

How does ISO 56001 IP management connect to trade secret protection and the R&D cycle of internal control?

IP management follows ISO 56005 and links to trade secret protection: ISO 56001 builds an innovation management system you can explain to others, and the reasonable confidentiality measures of the Trade Secrets Act (confidentiality grading, access and departure management, provable records) strengthen legal protection, so new and existing results are both managed and protected.

The R&D cycle under Article 7, item 8 of the internal control regulations for public companies includes the acquisition, maintenance and use of IP; ISO 56001 IP management and trade secret grading, marking and access records can join the same process. These regulations apply to public companies; companies that are not public companies are not bound by them but may refer to them voluntarily.

What does ESG indicator S-10 require, and what goes into the board report?

The TWSE ESG evaluation replaced the corporate governance evaluation from 2026 and covers listed companies; other companies are not evaluated but may refer to it voluntarily.

S-10 (an A+ item) asks whether the company has set and disclosed an IP management plan linked to its business goals and its implementation, reported to the board at least once a year. TIPS, ISO 56001 or a similar standard with third-party certification earns one extra point overall; the wording is the same in 2026 and 2027. The CTO should prepare the link between the IP plan and business goals, records of implementation and the material for the annual board report.

Who certifies, and can the consultant also issue the certificate?

No. Under clause 5.2.5 of ISO/IEC 17021-1, a management system certification body and the same legal entity must not provide management system consultancy. The consultant builds the system and does the gap analysis and internal audit; a separate certification body issues the certificate.

Before certification you complete internal audit, management review and corrective action; a third-party body then performs the stage 1 and stage 2 audits. The certificate runs on a 3-year cycle.

How does Winners help a CTO implement ISO 56001?

  • Build on the ISO 56001 high-level structure, sharing the skeleton with 9001 and 27001
  • Always run the system once on live innovation projects, not just write documents
  • IP management under ISO 56005, linked to trade secret protection
  • Winners is a consultant and does not certify; a third-party body certifies, and we accompany you
  • VP- and director-level consultants lead throughout, never outsourced; consultants hold ISO 56001 lead auditor qualifications
