Return on Equity (ROE)

Return on Equity (ROE) is a financial ratio that measures the rate of return on shareholder's equity, calculated as "Net Income / Average Shareholder's Equity." This metric reflects how efficiently a company uses its equity to generate profits. According to Taiwan's "Regulations Governing Information to be Published in Annual Reports of Public Companies," companies must disclose their ROE for the past five fiscal years as a key performance indicator for investor decision-making.

In Taiwan, ROE is a core metric for regulators and investors to assess corporate governance and performance. Persistently low ROE can raise market doubts about a company's sustainability, impacting its stock price. Furthermore, under Article 23 of the Company Act, directors have a fiduciary duty to act with the care of a good administrator. Maintaining healthy profitability, reflected by ROE, is a tangible manifestation of this duty, and failure to do so could lead to legal challenges from shareholders.

While not an explicit ISO clause, ROE is highly related to the objectives of several standards. For instance, ISO 31000:2018 (Risk management — Guidelines) helps organizations achieve their objectives, and a stable ROE is a key financial objective. ISO 9001:2015 (Quality management systems) directly impacts revenue and costs through process optimization, thereby influencing ROE. Additionally, compliance with the "Corporate Governance Best-Practice Principles for TWSE/TPEx Listed Companies," particularly on strengthening board functions, aims to enhance operational performance, which is ultimately reflected in financial indicators like ROE.
